The development of emoji was predated by text-based emoticons, as well as graphical representations, inside and outside of Japan. 

First Emoji was created by Shigetaka Kurita

The first emoji was created in 1999 in Japan by Shigetaka Kurita. He was part of the team working on NTT DoCoMo's i-mode mobile Internet platform. He took inspiration from weather forecasts that used symbols to show weather. These companies each defined their own variants of emoji using proprietary standards.

Development of Emoji

The first set of 176 12×12 pixel emoji was created as part of i-mode's messaging features to help facilitate electronic communication, and to serve as a distinguishing feature from other services. Kurita created the first 180 emoji based on the expressions that he observed people making and other things in the city. From 2010 onward, some emoji character sets have been incorporated into Unicode, a standard system for indexing characters, which has allowed them to be used outside Japan and to be standardized across different operating systems.

Well, it’s indeed someone job to read millions of expression and try their very best to abstractly design an emoji that suit such many miens. There is a team at google headed by Jen and their job is to create abstracts that represent your feelings and the real world.

She works with experts to design emoji, GIFs and stickers. They undertake their job by asking a lot of questions about the real world, people and how feelings are expressed.
Our day-to-day activities, symbols and frequent uses are designed as emoji and stickers or expressed in GIFs to make communication faster and smarter.

Emoji rendition across platforms

There have been differences in emoji design across the various platforms (Such as Android, IOS, Microsoft etc.) and application (Facebook, WhatsApp etc.). These sometimes create confusion among users. According to her, the confusion between the same emoji on different platforms happens because the leadership of the major companies hardly communicate with regards to maintaining a standard interpretation.

Jennifer’s favourite emoji

Jennifer's current favourite is the "cowboy" emoji and her least favourite is the "hug" emoji because it looks quite different across platforms. "If the hands are too far then they look like feet. If they're too close it looks like they're going to grope you."

What does the Emoji queen, Jennifer Daniel thinks about women?

As a woman, she thinks women should just be their selves. They are most often asked to lean-in which put them in situations that are structurally unsuited and hostile.
